Cheap waterproof GPS motorbike mount
April 29th, 2010
I have an unfortunate afliction where I like to change phones alot. These phones tend to be smartphones and can operate as a wireless GPS and music player. This means I need to place said smartphone somewhere on the bike thats waterproof and easily accessable whilst on the move. I know I could just stick said phone in to my pocket but its a pain if you want to use the GPS function and have a visual of the route you are following.
In the recent past I have used my fantastic rex marsee tank bag but infortunately that bag will not fit around the sculpted shape of the Stelvios petrol tank. I’ve therefore had to rethink the way I keep my phone clean, safe and dry whilst on the bike. Step in the Ram aquabox. This is a £36 water tight box that comes in various sizes and can house anything from a cheap GPS thats not waterproof to your mobile phone or anything else come to think of it. It mounts on to a standard ram ball mount. The clear plastic screen allows you to press the buttons of your chosen device without having to remove it. Ive not confirmed that my iphone will operate through the screen just yet. I’ll confirm that soon. My HTC Desire seems to work just fine using an un-gloved finger. At the back of the box is a pop out hole that allows you to feed a power cable in to the box to keep your device juiced up whilst on the move.
Enough whittling on. checkout the pics below…

This is great, can I call all of the above from Ram?
Where do I buy exactly those bits and your solution is very cost effective.

All of this kit is available from the RAM website. Just google your local supplier. One thing to note though is that not all smartphone screens will work through the clear screen of the box… An iPhone is a prime example. No touch screen. Ita not a real problem though because you just set and forget.
I also have a pretty cheap old Garmin satnav thats not waterproof. This works a treat inside the ram box… All in all, a very cheap work around to waterproofing a number of different bits of kit.

I’ve been thinking of getting one of these to use with my Desire.
How have you found using aquabox along with the phone? Which size did you go for? and is it bulky? It looks a little bulky in the pictures?
Thanks

I went for the medium so that I could carry a broad range of kit that i play with. I’m always trying out different phones so I wanted to guarantee they would fit. Ideally it could do with being a bit shallower because modern smart phones and car GPS units are so slim these days that you don’t need the depth that my particular box offers. One thing that I have noted is that you do need to be careful with the clear screen on the box. Its easy for the seal to peel back thus requiring you to carefully place the screen back in to the edge of the box.
Besides that, its just fine and for the money is a viable alternative to spending out £300+ on bike specific equipment.
